On Thursday May 24th, the Redskins and cheerleaders started their 80th Anniversary Thank You Kickoff Tour in Winchester. What an honor! The Skins are traveling through several different cities and towns in Redskin territory before the season begins and they will tear it up on the field soon!

What happened?
The Skins stopped in at a Winchester Rotary meeting,  NW Works, and came to conduct a big pep rally at Handley High School. They thanked devoted Winchester Redskins fans for their unwavering commitment.

The show was rocking, funny, and quite touching with the Redskins past and present players, and owners encouraging words of wisdom on and off the field.

Who was there?

The Redskins current players Mr Kory Lichtensteiger, and Mr Will Montgomery. Also, The Redskins Mr. Dexter Manley, Mr. Fred Dean, and Mr. Mark Moseley attended. The Executive VP and General Manager Mr. Bruce Allen. Mr Allen is the son of Hall of Famer, the great George Allen, who took the Redskins to their first superbowl win in 1973. Bruce Allen is also the brother to our former Virgina governor and Senator George Allen. Also in attendance was “The Voice” of the Redskins Mr. Larry Michael.

The Redskin Cheerleaders were there in force, who proudly brought back Michelle to her Winchester roots.

Our local Mr. Russ Potts, I was told, is responsible for the Redskins 80th anniversary kickoff. Also attending was Mr. Jimmy Wilkins Jr.,who graciously donated one million dollars in contributing to Handley’s beautiful renovations.

One of our biggest Redskins Winchester fans, and founder of Nerangis Enterprises, was huge local supporter and “Redskins Hoggette” Mr. Nick Nerangis, Sr.  What fun! Children especially enjoyed seeing outfit!

Dr. Ricky Leonard, our Winchester Public School System Superintendent & previous teacher, coach and principal at Handley High School.  He enjoyed his years at Handley and has three boys who attended Handley.

Speeches & Interviews:

Mr Mark Moseley spoke to the crowd. He is Texas native, graduating from Texas A & M, an NFL MVP, Superbowl Champion, UPI NFC Player of the Year and too many other career highlights and awards to list. (Thank you Google.)

Mr Moseley is married with 5 children, and is the Director of Franchising and local owner of Five Guys Restaurants. He gave a moving talk to all of our local fans and football and other sports players from several of our surrounding high schools. He shared advice his father gave him about conquering goals, “If it’s not worth working hard for, then it is not worth getting.”

He also shared with me an interesting story. Ophra Winfrey’s favorite doctor, the Heart Surgeon-turned-famous health guru from the daily TV show “The Dr.Oz Show”, secretly sent out investigators testing 5 Guys food. He was grateful to hear that 5 Guys was named on the show as one of the healthier choices when eating out fast.

Current players Mr. Kory Lichtensteiger, and Mr. Will Montgomery, both expressed a love of golf.  Kory has a BS in criminal justice. He is from Convoy, Ohio. Will is from Centerville,VA… forgive me, but they both have also have too many high school and college sports personal awards to list.

Lichtensteiger paid tribute to his surgeon,  doctors, and physical therapists, after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee this past season. He stated,  “Never, ever giving up on the goal, the next victory is what it is all about…personally & professionally. I want to be a part of taking the Redskins to the next Super Bowl.” When asked about Redskins charity work, as he has been healing, he described handing out much needed food and quick words of encouragement, hope & high fives to so many needy children in the DC area.

Montgomery stated that he and Lichtensteiger like to try to “kill each other” in golf whenever possible. Just like in football and in life somebody can pull out a last minute miracle.”

Montgomery pointed to his close friend and teammate, and laughed, shaking his head about a recent memorable golf game where Litchensteiger did just that.

Knowing a little more about the Skins now, and their entourage, this upcoming season is sure to ignite excitement, especially with “RGIII” being added, we all simply have to get together with family and friends in Winchester’s restaurants and pubs, and watch what’s sure to be an incredible season.
